Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto President Emeritus and former Dean of Medicine Dr. David Naylor is the recipient of the 2018 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research. As one of Canada’s preeminent health leaders, the prize recognizes Dr. Naylor’s important contributions to health research and public policy, which have significantly impacted health delivery, education, administration and health research funding.

"David’s remarkable capacity to analyze and unravel the complexities of the Canadian healthcare system, together with the ability to communicate it eloquently and lucidly, is unique and explains his reputation as a thought leader," said Dr. Aubie Angel, President of Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (FCIHR) in the Friesen Prize announcement made earlier this week.

Active in public policy for nearly 30 years, Dr. Naylor recently chaired the federal review of support for fundamental science that produced the "Naylor Report," which outlined a strategy to strengthen Canada's research community. Key recommendations in the review led to significant investments in the most recent federal budget.

The Friesen Prize, awarded annually by FCIHR, "recognizes exceptional innovation by a visionary health leader of international stature." The prize will also support an annual lecture to be held in the fall.
