The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Division Director, Respirology. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as a Respirologist at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto.  Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, administration and leadership.  The term of appointment is five years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be January 1, 2022.

An aspirational leader is sought to advance the academic enterprise of the Division of Respirology over the next five years. The ideal candidate will be an internationally respected scholar and visionary leader, with sophisticated interpersonal skills and proven success in fostering a diverse cultural environment.  They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University, and the affiliated teaching hospitals, to build a culture in which all stakeholders – learners and faculty members – will thrive.  They will build strong city-wide collaborations, bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity in research across disciplines, and provide strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all career stages. The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division. The Director reports directly to the Chair of Medicine.

The University of Toronto has the largest cluster of academic clinical respirologists in Canada, with 50 full time and 33 part-time and adjunct clinical faculty. The division is internationally recognized for its training and scholarship across all disciplines within the field of respirology. The division takes great pride in its Residency Training Program, which is the largest in Canada and, therefore, plays a critical role in training the next generation of respirologists. On average, the program has over 13 residents and 27 fellows who have come from across Canada and abroad to train here. We are dedicated to providing unparalleled clinical care, conducting cutting edge research, and training the next generation of respirologists while continuing to foster a culture in which everyone can thrive. The depth of expertise and accomplishments of our faculty, the breadth and rigor of our training and research activities, and our internationally acclaimed sub-specialties highlight the excellence of our division.

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with over 900 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully affiliated hospitals, 6 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. The Department of Medicine is a research powerhouse with $185+ million annual research funding (2018).  For more information about the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, please visit our website at https://www.deptmedicine.utoronto.ca. The Department of Medicine’s academic position descriptions can be viewed on this webpage: https://www.deptmedicine.utoronto.ca/academic-position-descriptions#AcademicPositionDescriptions.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in Respirology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following of the University’s fully-affiliated sites: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, Sinai Health System – Mt Sinai Hospital, Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael’s Hospital, or Women’s College Hospital. Estimated total remuneration from all sources will be in the range of $250-350,000 and commensurate with qualifications, experience, and clinical work.

Applications will be accepted until October 15, 2021. Should you be interested in this opportunity, please forward a letter of interest (LOI) and up-to-date curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of three referees to:

Dr. Gillian Hawker, Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor and Chair of Medicine

c/o melanie.moscovitch@utoronto.ca

Candidates should include in their LOI a statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics including but not limited to knowledge about equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI); a track record of advancing EDI; and plans to advance EDI within Respirology.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
