Nominate your outstanding colleagues for the Department of Medicine Prizes and Awards.
This call is for nominations for the Department of Medicine Prizes and Awards for both 2021 and 2022. Awards for each year will be given at our 2022 Annual Day celebration. Eligibility criteria limitations (e.g., within 10 years of appointment to the department for the Goldie Prizes) and the impact of the pandemic on academic productivity will be taken into consideration in the adjudication process.

- Eaton Scholar Researcher of the Year Award – Basic Science

General criteria:
- Individuals with a primary appointment to the Department of Medicine during the 20-21 or 21-22 academic years are eligible.
- Self-nominations are not permitted.
- Unless otherwise specified, nominations are welcome from members of the Department of Medicine, undergraduate and post-graduate trainees, and allied health professionals.
- A past recipient of an award is ineligible for re-nomination of that specific award
- The Department of Medicine is strongly committed to promoting a culture of inclusion and encourages nominations of racialized persons/persons of colour, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, and others who have contributed to our goal of achieving inclusive excellence in our department.

CQuIPS, Canada’s leading quality improvement and patient safety training centre, is looking to add an Education Lead to its leadership team.
CQuIPS, Canada’s leading quality improvement and patient safety training centre, is looking to add an Education Lead to its leadership team. This individual will play a key role in the development, organization and scholarship of its education programs. They will be involved in curriculum development and evaluation, and education research. They will also work towards the Centre’s key themes of health system resilience and health equity through learner recruitment, faculty development and education programming.
The successful candidate will receive an annual stipend to support this work. The position is for a 3-year term with the opportunity to renew and will require a commitment of 0.1 FTE.
The individual must have either:
- Advanced training in QIPS (e.g., certificate, MSc in QIPS, etc.) with a strong interest in education; OR
- Advanced training in education (e.g., certificate, MEd, etc.) with a strong interest in QIPS.

About CQuIPS
The Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) is an extra-departmental unit of the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, supported jointly by Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children and Women’s College Hospital. CQuIPS has an international reputation as a leading centre in building capacity among healthcare providers and leaders to implement change at a health-system level to improve the quality of care that patients and families experience. The CQuIPS strategic plan for 2020-2024 lists learning as one of its three domains of work, with the other two being scholarship and networking. CQuIPS currently delivers two longitudinal QI education courses for healthcare providers, a Co-Learning QI program for physician trainees, and a Fellowship course for healthcare providers and QI researchers. The Centre also supports the Veterans Affairs Quality Scholars program in Toronto and has partnerships with the IHPME Masters QIPS program.

The funding available for any individual project will range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the period of funding required. Up to $25,000 will be awarded for each competition.
The MEdS team will be accepting short proposals (maximum three pages) with a deadline of October 31, 2023.
Submissions will receive preference if they relate to our 2023 Priority areas:
- Promoting research and scholarship in areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion;
- Competency-based medical education; and
- Innovations in teaching and assessments of teaching effectiveness.

The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Division Director, Nephrology. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as a Nephrologist at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, administration and leadership. The term of appointment is five years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be January 1, 2022 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period.
An aspirational leader is sought to advance the academic enterprise of the Division of Nephrology over the next five years. The ideal candidate will be an internationally respected scholar and visionary leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills, and proven success in fostering a diverse cultural environment. They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University and the affiliated teaching hospitals to build a culture in which all stakeholders – learners and faculty members - will thrive. They will build strong city-wide collaborations, bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity in research across disciplines, and provide strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all career stages. The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division. The Director reports directly to the Chair of Medicine.
The University of Toronto has one of the largest clusters of academic clinical nephrologists in Canada, with 42 full-time and 32 part-time and adjunct clinical faculty. The Residency Training Program is the largest in Canada, with over 60 post-graduate residents and fellows who come from across Canada and abroad to train here. We are dedicated to expanding the knowledge base of causes, treatments and cures for kidney disease; to provide unparalleled care to patients; and to train the next generation of nephrologist practitioners and scientists. The depth of expertise and accomplishments of our faculty, and the breadth and rigor of our training and research activities, as well as our internationally acclaimed sub-specialties, serve to highlight the vigor of our division.
The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with over 900 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully affiliated hospitals, 6 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. The Department of Medicine is a research powerhouse with $185+ million annual research funding (2018). Applicants must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in Nephrology by the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the
Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following University’s fully-affiliated sites: Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, Sinai Health System – Mt. Sinai Hospital or Unity Health Toronto - St. Michael’s Hospital. Estimated total remuneration from all sources will be in the range of $250-350,000 and commensurate with qualifications, experience and clinical work.
