This grants program aims to support Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS) projects with a defined and timely objective, and will have a preference for pilot projects aiming to generate data for applications to external funding agencies. The funding available for any individual project will range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the period of funding required.

For the inaugural 2021 grant competition, the MEdS team will be accepting short proposals (maximum three pages) with a deadline of December 20, 2021.

Submissions will receive preference if they relate to our 2021 Priority areas:

  • Promoting research and scholarship in areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion;
  • Competency-based medical education; and
  • Innovations in teaching and assessments of teaching effectiveness.

Project proposals that extend beyond these priority areas will also be considered.

The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Division Director, Nephrology. An aspirational leader is sought to advance the academic enterprise of the Division of Nephrology over the next five years. The University of Toronto has one of the largest clusters of academic clinical nephrologists in Canada, with 42 full-time and 32 part-time and adjunct clinical faculty. The Residency Training Program is the largest in Canada, with over 60 post-graduate residents and fellows who come from across Canada and abroad to train here. We are dedicated to expanding the knowledge base of causes, treatments and cures for kidney disease; to provide unparalleled care to patients; and to train the next generation of nephrologist practitioners and scientists. The depth of expertise and accomplishments of our faculty, and the breadth and rigor of our training and research activities, as well as our internationally acclaimed sub-specialties, serve to highlight the vigor of our division. 

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with over 900 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully affiliated hospitals, 6 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites. The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS).  The Department of Medicine has made significant and meaningful contributions to the Medical Education Scholarship community and literature. The Assistant Director, MEdS role is intended to ensure the Department of Medicine community continues to contribute to the discovery of new knowledge, with particular attention to providing mentorship to residents, fellows, Clinician Teachers, and Clinician Educators. 

The Assistant Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS) will report to the Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS).  The term of the Assistant Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS) appointment is three years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review.  Effective start date will be August 1, 2021, or an alternative date as mutually agreed upon.

The Department of Medicine recognizes diversity and inclusion as cornerstones to excellence in both academic and clinical realms. It is preferred that the Assistant Director be an early to midcareer Clinician who has successfully passed their Continuing Faculty Appointment Review. 

The Assistant Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS) will be a full-time clinical faculty member appointed to the Department of Medicine at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a preferred academic position description of Clinician Teacher or Clinician Educator.  Applicants should be recognized as skilled and qualified in the realm of Medical Education Scholarship and mentorship.  The incumbent will be responsible for building a distributed, inclusive, and diverse community of faculty mentors in MEdS, and to implement equitable practices for identifying, attracting, and supporting junior MEdS Investigators. Additionally, the incumbent will advise and advocate for Clinician Teachers and Clinician Educators to help them navigate the local ecosystem to succeed in their MEdS work, assist with career planning related to junior and senior promotion pathways, and advise on application of education theory to the design of MEdS projects and on the applicability of those projects to clinical education.

The ideal candidate is an effective communicator with an interest in fostering collaboration and building networks. They will have demonstrated leadership experience and will be supportive, personable and approachable.

The Assistant Director of Medical Education Scholarship (MEdS) will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University Health Network (UHN) is seeking to recruit a Clinician-Scientist with expertise clinical epidemiology and population studies in diabetes for a permanent position. Graduate work in health profession's education is preferred.

The successful applicant must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Effective start date is October 1, 2021, or a mutually agreeable date.

The combined division of Endocrinology at UHN/Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) consists of over 20 full-time members and an additional 18 affiliate members located across all UHN and MSH sites, with active clinical and research programs across the full breadth of endocrinology and metabolism.

The successful candidate should have appropriate experience and a track record or postgraduate training in the specified research expertise, such that they will be able to develop and maintain a productive independent research program. The successful applicant must hold MD and FRCPC qualifications (or equivalent specialist designation), and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.

Academic rank, salary and contractual arrangements will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Resident Co-Chair, Core Internal Medicine Accreditation Task Force (AC Task Force). The Co-Chairs, of the AC Task Force will establish the AC Task force membership and work plan and ensure the Task Force is a safe environment where resident and faculty input are confidential while meeting the milestones of the work plan.  

The Resident Co-Chair, AC Task Force will report to the Executive Committee of the Department of MedicineThe term of the Resident Co-Chair, AC Task Force is one year, with potential for renewal for an additional year.  Effective start date is June 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed.

The Department of Medicine recognizes diversity and inclusion as cornerstones to excellence in both academic and clinical realms. The Resident Co-Chair must be a resident in good standing who will be either a Core Internal Medicine (IM) Resident in their PGY2, PGY3 year or a PGY4 resident in IM effective July 1, 2021. Current and past Chief Medical Residents are not eligible for this position as the administrative role of the Chief Medical Resident poses a potential conflict of interest.

The Resident Co-Chair, AC Task Force will be a full-time resident appointed to the Department of Medicine.  The ideal candidate is an effective communicator and is a committed advocate for improving the resident learning experience. S/he is supportive, collaborative, assertive, and approachable and has demonstrated leadership experience/potential.

The incumbent will work alongside the Faculty Co-Chair; together they will be responsible for:

  • Selecting the members of the AC Task Force;
  • Establishing the Task Force work plan;
  • Chairing the meetings of the Task Force;
  • Ensuring the Task Force meets the milestones of the work plan (see Task Force Terms of Reference);
  • Ensuring that the Task Force is a safe environment;
  • Ensuring individual resident input is kept strictly confidential and that information is reported in an aggregate manner, which will ensure individual residents cannot be identified; and,
  • Developing a communication plan for the Task Force’s work with particular attention to communication with the residents in the program, the RPC, departmental leadership and PGME.

The AC Task Force will be provided administrative support so as to minimize disruption to the members’ training and clinical/academic activities. The IM Program will provide the Resident Co-Chair, AC Task Force flexible, protected time to enable participation in task force activities. It is anticipated that the time commitment will be greatest over the summer of 2021 and decline thereafter. In recognition of the resident’s contribution to this time-limited and critical activity, the Resident Co-Chair, AC Task Force will receive a modest stipend from the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine is now accepting applications for the September 2021 start date of the 2021-2023 cohort of the Master Teacher Program. **Deadline extended to July 12, 2021**

The Master Teacher Program is a two-year faculty development program designed to meet the learning needs of each participant. Participating physicians attend the program one half-day per week. Classes for the cohort beginning September 2021 will take place on Monday afternoons. The program provides a series of interactive seminars on medical teaching and education topics and opportunities to present participant teaching methods through clinical teaching practica.

The core series includes sessions on essential teaching topics: small and large group teaching techniques, bedside teaching, assessing learner needs, promotion of understanding and retention of knowledge, evaluation and assessment, feedback, teaching in difficult situations, competence by design, equity, diversity and allyship, along with many other teaching and education topics of relevance. Participants may also elect to take additional relevant graduate courses offered at the University.

The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care. Embodied in our Strategic Plan for 2020-24, is a vision for innovative models of medical education in response to a rapidly changing landscape in teaching, learning and patient care. The pace of change demands new initiatives in delivery of virtual care and teaching and learning in a virtual environment, quality improvement and patient safety, and collaboration with other departments and educational units for training in impactful cross-disciplinary ambulatory practice. As patient care in ambulatory settings continues to shift to virtual and other platforms, there is an imminent need for the Department to lead the coordination and innovation in these disparate areas.

The Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care will report to the Vice Chair Education. The term of the Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care appointment is three years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is July 1, 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.

The Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care will be a full time clinical faculty member appointed to the Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with an academic position description of Clinician Teacher. Applicants should be recognized as skilled and qualified in the realm of Virtual and Ambulatory Care teaching, delivery and professional development. The incumbent will lead the coordination of the faculty development and learner education to effectively use these models of educational and clinical practice. Additionally, this role will lead the coordination and collaboration of the Department of Medicine with other Departments and academic units to develop and implement new models of teaching and care. Key to success will be the dissemination—through presentations, workshops and publications—the results of these innovative initiatives on local, national and international levels.

The ideal candidate is an effective communicator with an interest in fostering collaboration and building networks. S/he has demonstrated leadership experience and is supportive, personable and approachable.

The Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Residency Program Director, Endocrinology & Metabolism. The Division offers one of the largest training programs in Endocrinology & Metabolism in Canada (8-10 residents); faculty members are national and international leaders in education and research.  Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Successful completion of the Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) is required.  The term of the Endocrinology & Metabolism Program Director (PD) appointment is five years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is July 1, 2021, or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.

The Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Toronto is a dynamic and vibrant division, being central to the clinical care of complex patients at all of the major teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto, the home of the discovery of insulin. The research, education, and clinical care in the Division is world-class, and the numerous hospital sites offer an unparalleled breadth and depth of training and research experiences in the field of Endocrinology & Metabolism.

The Endocrinology & Metabolism PD is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall success of the Division and the Department. The Endocrinology & Metabolism PD is responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Royal College Endocrinology & Metabolism residency training program. The PD reports jointly to the Vice-Chair, Education or his/her designate and the Departmental Division Director. The PD is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an interest in education. A solid track record of scholarship and innovation would be a strong asset. S/he will ensure that residents are able to achieve the competencies of Endocrinology & Metabolism and that they are thoroughly prepared for their Royal College examinations and future careers as Endocrinology & Metabolism Specialists.  Specific attention to resident wellness is a must.

The Program Director for Endocrinology & Metabolism will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $37,500 plus HST.  The PD will have support from an administrative assistant and use team workspace within the Department of Medicine.
