The Department of Medicine is now accepting applications for the September 2021 start date of the 2021-2023 cohort of the Master Teacher Program. **Deadline extended to July 12, 2021**

The Master Teacher Program is a two-year faculty development program designed to meet the learning needs of each participant. Participating physicians attend the program one half-day per week. Classes for the cohort beginning September 2021 will take place on Monday afternoons. The program provides a series of interactive seminars on medical teaching and education topics and opportunities to present participant teaching methods through clinical teaching practica.

The core series includes sessions on essential teaching topics: small and large group teaching techniques, bedside teaching, assessing learner needs, promotion of understanding and retention of knowledge, evaluation and assessment, feedback, teaching in difficult situations, competence by design, equity, diversity and allyship, along with many other teaching and education topics of relevance. Participants may also elect to take additional relevant graduate courses offered at the University.

The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care. Embodied in our Strategic Plan for 2020-24, is a vision for innovative models of medical education in response to a rapidly changing landscape in teaching, learning and patient care. The pace of change demands new initiatives in delivery of virtual care and teaching and learning in a virtual environment, quality improvement and patient safety, and collaboration with other departments and educational units for training in impactful cross-disciplinary ambulatory practice. As patient care in ambulatory settings continues to shift to virtual and other platforms, there is an imminent need for the Department to lead the coordination and innovation in these disparate areas.

The Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care will report to the Vice Chair Education. The term of the Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care appointment is three years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is July 1, 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.

The Director of Professional Development in Virtual and Ambulatory Care will be a full time clinical faculty member appointed to the Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with an academic position description of Clinician Teacher. The incumbent will lead the coordination of the faculty development and learner education to effectively use these models of educational and clinical practice. Additionally, this role will lead the coordination and collaboration of the Department of Medicine with other Departments and academic units to develop and implement new models of teaching and care. Key to success will be the dissemination—through presentations, workshops and publications—the results of these innovative initiatives on local, national and international levels.

The Endocrinology & Metabolism PD is responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Royal College Endocrinology & Metabolism residency training program. The PD reports jointly to the Vice-Chair, Education or his/her designate and the Departmental Division Director. The PD is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an interest in education. S/he will ensure that residents are able to achieve the competencies of Endocrinology & Metabolism and that they are thoroughly prepared for their Royal College examinations and future careers as Endocrinology & Metabolism Specialists.  Specific attention to resident wellness is a must.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Endocrinology & Metabolism Specialist or be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Program Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following fully-affiliated University sites:  Sinai Health Systems, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC), St. Michael’s Hospital, University Health Network or Women’s College Hospital. The Program Director for Endocrinology & Metabolism will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $37,500 plus HST.  The PD will have support from an administrative assistant and use team workspace within the Department of Medicine.

This Drucker Family Innovation Fund Grants is a joint funding program between the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre (BBDC) and the University Health Network/Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Medicine. Multiple grants will be awarded per year.

The program provides funding of up to $50,000 per application to enable eligible investigators to explore innovative research that may change the paradigm and reorient the field in a new direction. The emphasis of this grant is on INNOVATION. Applicants must demonstrate to reviewers that their proposal does not simply represent a logical extension of their existing research program.

Preference will be given to high risk innovative proposals focused on diabetes and metabolism research; however, in the absence of meritorious applications in the area of diabetes and metabolism, submissions related to other areas of biomedical research will be considered.

Applications must be received by 4 p.m., April 20, 2021. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applicants must be an experienced full-time clinical faculty member appointed to the Department of Medicine for at least 10 years and hold a rank of Associate Professor or higher. The term of the Lead – Later Career Transitions appointment is one to three years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is March 1, 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.

The Department of Medicine recognizes diversity and inclusion as cornerstones to excellence in both academic and clinical realms. In partnership with key stakeholders and based on the identified needs of DoM members, the Lead – Later Career Transitions will implement relevant evidence-based strategies to support mentorship of late-career faculty, liaise with stakeholders to ensure late-career transitions are supporting the Department and hospitals in meeting clinical and academic expectations, and will support evaluation of initiatives in collaboration with the Vice-Chair, Culture and Inclusion and Chair, Department of Medicine.   

The Lead – Later Career Transitions is a leadership role. The incumbent will develop a late-career mentorship and retirement planning program for Department faculty, engaging and formalizing an existing network of “Retirement Coaches” who can speak from experience and are available for mentorship and support. Content for the program will be informed by a needs assessment to accurately understand current challenges faced by late-career faculty approaching transition. Together with the Chair of the Department, you will develop policies and procedures regarding late-career clinicians in order to meet hospital needs. It is expected this work will be done in consultation and collaboration with the Physicians-in-Chief, and recommendations brought forward to applicable TAHSN committees.

The ideal candidate is an effective communicator with an interest in fostering collaboration and building networks. A proven track record of mentorship experience across the academic lifespan would be a strong asset. S/he has demonstrated leadership experience and is supportive, personable and approachable.

The Lead – Later Career Transitions will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $15,000.

The Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant (BScPA) program based in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is looking for a Medical Foundations Course Director.

Reporting to the Medical Director, and in keeping with the goals and objectives of the BScPA Physician Assistant Professional Degree Program and the Consortium of PA Education, the Medical Foundations Course Director has the overall responsibility for designing, planning, implementing and evaluating the course curriculum for the Medical Foundations courses. The reporting of curriculum and assessments is to the BScPA Program Director. Co-ordination of dates for class and assessments and faculty support to the online learning management platform is with the BScPA Academic Coordinator and Program Assistant.

This is a one year term appointment.

S/he will ensure that residents are able to achieve the competencies of Emergency Medicine and that they are thoroughly prepared for their Royal College examinations and future careers as Emergency Medicine Specialists.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Emergency Medicine Specialist or be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Program Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following fully-affiliated University sites:  Sinai Health Systems, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC), St. Michael’s Hospital or University Health Network. The Program Director for Emergency Medicine will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $75,000 plus HST. The PD will have support from a full-time administrative assistant and use team workspace within the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Residency Program Director (APD), Internal Medicine. The Division offers the largest training program in Internal Medicine in Canada (200 residents) alongside faculty members who are national and international leaders in education and research. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Effective start date for the APD term will be March 1, 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on.

The Internal Medicine APD is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall success of the Division and the Department. The Internal Medicine APD will assist the Program Director for Internal Medicine and will be jointly responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada’s Internal Medicine residency training program. The APD will be supported by the Residency Program Committee.  The APD reports jointly to the Vice-Chair, Education or his/her designate and the Program Director, Internal Medicine. The APD is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.

The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with an interest in education scholarship. A solid track record of scholarship and innovation would be a strong asset. They will ensure that residents are able to achieve the competencies of Internal Medicine and that they are thoroughly prepared for their Royal College examinations and future careers as Internal Medicine Specialists.

The preferred hospital site for the Program Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and will be one of the following fully-affiliated University sites: Sinai Health Systems, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, or Women’s College Hospital. The APD for Internal Medicine will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine and may negotiate further salary support from the clinical site practice plan.
