The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Lead – Later Career Transitions. The Department of Medicine (DoM) is committed to ensuring an inclusive culture where all of its members feel a sense of belonging, where there is recognition and support for their well-being and equity and where all are supported to achieve fulfillment and excellence across all stages of their career. The Lead – Later Career Transitions, will develop a late career mentorship and retirement program for Department Faculty. Applicants must be an experienced full-time clinical faculty member appointed to the Department of Medicine for at least 10 years and hold a rank of Associate Professor or higher. The term of the Lead – Later Career Transitions appointment is one to three years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is March 1, 2021 or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.
The Department of Medicine recognizes diversity and inclusion as cornerstones to excellence in both academic and clinical realms. In partnership with key stakeholders and based on the identified needs of DoM members, the Lead – Later Career Transitions will implement relevant evidence-based strategies to support mentorship of late-career faculty, liaise with stakeholders to ensure late-career transitions are supporting the Department and hospitals in meeting clinical and academic expectations, and will support evaluation of initiatives in collaboration with the Vice-Chair, Culture and Inclusion and Chair, Department of Medicine.
The Lead – Later Career Transitions is a leadership role. The incumbent will develop a late-career mentorship and retirement planning program for Department faculty, engaging and formalizing an existing network of “Retirement Coaches” who can speak from experience and are available for mentorship and support. Content for the program will be informed by a needs assessment to accurately understand current challenges faced by late-career faculty approaching transition. Together with the Chair of the Department, you will develop policies and procedures regarding late-career clinicians in order to meet hospital needs. It is expected this work will be done in consultation and collaboration with the Physicians-in-Chief, and recommendations brought forward to applicable TAHSN committees.
The ideal candidate is an effective communicator with an interest in fostering collaboration and building networks. A proven track record of mentorship experience across the academic lifespan would be a strong asset. S/he has demonstrated leadership experience and is supportive, personable and approachable.
The Lead – Later Career Transitions will receive an annual stipend from the Department of Medicine in the amount of $15,000.

The Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant (BScPA) program based in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is looking for a Medical Foundations Course Director.
Reporting to the Medical Director, and in keeping with the goals and objectives of the BScPA Physician Assistant Professional Degree Program and the Consortium of PA Education, the Medical Foundations Course Director has the overall responsibility for designing, planning, implementing and evaluating the course curriculum for the Medical Foundations courses. The reporting of curriculum and assessments is to the BScPA Program Director. Co-ordination of dates for class and assessments and faculty support to the online learning management platform is with the BScPA Academic Coordinator and Program Assistant.
This is a one year term appointment.

The Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Residency Program Director, Emergency Medicine. The Division offers one of the largest training programs in Emergency Medicine in Canada (50 residents); faculty members are national and international leaders in education and research. Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Successful completion of the Continuing Faculty Appointment Review (CFAR) is required. The term of the Emergency Medicine Program Director (PD) appointment is five years with the possibility of one renewal following a successful review. Effective start date is July 1, 2021, or an alternative date as mutually agreed on with a transition/mentorship period prior to the start date.
The Division of Emergency Medicine at the University of Toronto is a dynamic and vibrant division, being central to the clinical care of complex patients at all of the major teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto. Trainees and faculty in the two adult (Department of Medicine & Department of Family and Community Medicine) and one pediatric divisions of Emergency Medicine collaborate in education and research endeavours.
The Emergency Medicine PD is a leadership position, highly valued and pivotal to the overall success of the Division and the Department. The Emergency Medicine PD is responsible for the overall conduct, organization and accountability of the Royal College Emergency Medicine residency training program. The PD is supported by an assistant PD and reports jointly to the Vice-Chair, Education or his/her designate and the Departmental Division Director. The PD is also accountable to the Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education.
The ideal candidate is a respected clinical teacher and innovative leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with an interest in education scholarship. A solid track record of scholarship and innovation would be a strong asset. S/he will ensure that residents are able to achieve the competencies of Emergency Medicine and that they are thoroughly prepared for their Royal College examinations and future careers as Emergency Medicine Specialists.
Applicants must hold an MD degree, be a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Emergency Medicine Specialist or be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario. There are two DoM Quality & Innovation awards:
- The William Goldie Prize and Travel Award in Quality Improvement & Innovation is awarded to a junior faculty member of the Department who is within ten years of initial appointment to the Department and who has made significant contributions that one would characterize as falling under the rubric of Quality Improvement & Innovation. Please note that the 10-year window of eligibility can be extended in cases where the nominee was off work due to parental or illness leave.
- The Department of Medicine Quality & Innovation Award recognizes outstanding leadership or academic contributions to the fields of healthcare quality, patient safety, and innovation. Examples might efforts to improve the degree to which patients receive proven aspects of care (e.g., increasing guideline concordant care), reducing harms to patients from medical care (patient safety), as well as innovations in health services delivery—new models care of that improve outcomes, the patient experience, or healthcare value. Consider nominating someone who was promoted to associate or full professor on basis of CPA whose work relates to quality improvement or innovation.

Purpose
The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty who have shown sustained excellence in mentoring other members of the Department including helping them to develop their professional careers while balancing the competing challenges of their personal lives.
Definition
Mentorship is a process whereby an experienced, highly regarded, empathetic person (the mentor) guides another (usually younger or more junior) individual (the mentee) in the development and re-examination of their own ideas, learning, and personal and professional development.
Eligibility
All faculty member in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto
Nomination Process
Nominations should be submitted by faculty members from within the Department of Medicine. Please submit nomination letters to dom.events@utoronto.ca by February 16, 2021. All nominees will then be contacted and asked to complete:
- A brief personal statement that outlines their mentoring philosophy and supports the attainment of criteria above through mentoring activities, and
- A table of their mentorship activities.
The nominee’s submission must be received by no later than March 5, 2021. A minimum of one nominator must be from the Department of Medicine.
Nomination Materials
Nominators will complete this nomination form and provide a letter describing how their mentor has helped them. As this award is focused on the mentorship of faculty, please provide information on mentorship at the faculty level, not at the trainee level.
Nomination Criteria
Nominations will be judged on the following criteria:
- The mentor’s qualities and behaviours including being accessible, developing good rapport, providing opportunities for mentees, and being a role model for professionalism,
- Outcomes including impact on careers, productivity of their mentees, and overall breadth and depth of their mentorship activities, and
- Innovation in mentoring (if applicable).
The committee recognizes that mentorship excellence can take on many forms. One mentor may contribute with great impact to a single individual, or mentors may contribute in a more narrow (but equally impactful) scope to multiple mentees. The full range of mentorship activities and type will be considered for this award. Letters may be submitted by more than one mentee although this is not a requirement. Letters should focus on specific examples of the mentor’s impact as experienced or directly observed by the nominator.

Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year
The Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year Award, established in 1989, recognizes a member of the Department of Medicine who has demonstrated sustained excellence as a teacher and role model over several years. The award, consisting of a commemorative certificate, is presented at the Department of Medicine Annual Day. The award is open to full- and part-time faculty members who have a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine. Previous winners of the award are not eligible for re-nomination. Categories of contributions are listed below. Candidates are not required to have made contributions in all these areas:
- Sustained excellence in teaching;
- Educational research and/or scholarship;
- Leadership in education.

William Goldie Prize and Travel Awards
The William Goldie Prize and Travel Award in Education was established in 1945 by an anonymous donor to honour the late Dr. William Goldie, who held a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine. The education prize — consisting of a commemorative certificate and travel grant — is awarded annually to a member of the department who is within ten years of appointment to the department and who has made a contribution of notable merit to the advancement of sound knowledge in internal medicine through teaching. In recent years, the DoM has also awarded a William Goldie Prize and Travel Award in Teaching. Previous winners of the award of the award are not eligible for re-nomination.

The Department of Medicine’s overriding mission is to ensure the delivery of excellent clinical care in its associated hospitals, and the preparation of future physician leaders that will help carry this mission forward throughout Canada and the World. Within the Department, certain faculty members serve as exemplars of this mission, providing leadership in patient care that elevates and enlarges the profession.
In 2021, we will induct the second class of the Academy of Master Clinicians, honouring those clinicians who have demonstrated sustained clinical expertise and the highest standard of patient care. The Academy of Master Clinicians reflects those clinicians who are recognized by colleagues and the medical community for expert diagnostic acumen and an ability to confront challenging cases, while demonstrating humility, respect and civility for patients and colleagues.
Nomination:
Nominations are welcome from current full-time clinical faculty members of the Department of Medicine. The faculty member serves as a primary nominator, and assembles additional nominators to include: two colleagues of the nominee, a trainee, and a patient or other non-physician, such as an allied health professional. Self-nomination is not permitted.
Process:
A nomination packet must include the following:

- Primary letter of nomination. A letter of support from the primary nominator that speaks to the criteria of the Academy of Master Clinicians, 1,000 words.
- Letters of support by other nominators. Support letters by the four additional nominators that speak to the criteria. 500 words each. To ensure a fair and equal review process, any additional letters of support beyond the four stipulated, will not be considered.
Criteria:
The Master Clinician should demonstrate excellence in all domains. It is highly recommended that all nomination letters address each of the criteria below in turn.

- Individual Patient Advocacy: Takes “extra steps” to provide excellent patient care
Eligibility:
Active full-time clinical faculty members of the Department of Medicine with a continuing faculty appointment. No post-humus or post-retirement eligibility. University of Toronto Department of Medicine DDDs and Vice Chairs are not eligible for nomination.
The Department of Medicine is strongly committed to diversity within their communities and especially welcome applications from racialized persons/persons of color, women, Indigenous/Aboriginal People of North America, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ persons, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.

The Department of Medicine’s Eliot Phillipson Clinician-Scientist Training Program (CSTP) trains future faculty members who will engage in research as a major component of their career in academic medicine.
Applications are now being accepted for a July 1, 2021 start.
Application deadline is December 7th, 2020.

Interviews will be held on January 27, 2021.
