Beyond Heroes: Building Supportive Work Cultures in Health Care
Google map
A webinar offered in conjunction with Vernissage Health, a leadership development initiative of the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
Health care organizations have long relied on the heroics of providers to save the day. Such heroics often result in temporary workarounds and quick fixes that leave patient safety and quality care at risk.
The high pressure and often disjointed work environment for health providers can put workers at high risk for “burnout.” After prolonged stress, health providers frequently move into work environments with fewer demands or even leave the health field entirely.
While Canadians publicly heralded front line health providers as “heroes” during the pandemic, the post-pandemic health system, and those who work in it, are fragile. To ensure the well-being of the health system health leaders will need to focus on building better work environments.
In this webinar, a patient advocate and two pairs of health leaders—a physician pair and a nursing pair—will examine today’s work culture post pandemic. Each of the health leaders is at a different stage of their career, some are early emerging leaders while others are mid- to late-career leaders. From their unique perspective, panelists will address: How do we “make a fresh start” and build healthier, more supportive work places for providers and patients? How can health leaders support, engage and reenergize a work force that is frankly, “running on empty?”

CQuIPS Training: Artificial intelligence and machine learning in QIPS
Google map
Masterclass
Dr. Patricia Trbovich, Dr. Amanda Mayo, and Dr. Laura C. Rosella
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is an area that is exploding! We constantly hear about its potential to transform how we work and care for patients. But what is AI/ML exactly? And how can quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS) practitioners and AI/ML experts combine efforts? In this three-hour interactive session, we will review how AI/ML is being integrated into healthcare processes and services, as this is where AI/ML and QIPS complementary skills will emerge. Rarely do AI/ML systems deliver services on their own. It is much more likely that clinical teams will interact with AI/ML systems to provide care. You will learn the fundamentals of AI/ML and how to determine when to incorporate AI/ML in your QIPS work. Through the use of examples, you will learn to identify how improvement science methods can help answer questions related to how AI/ML systems can support clinicians, and how their interaction can be optimized. You will walk away knowing how to critically appraise when AI/ML is of value for your project and how it should be used.

CQuIPS Training: Qualitative research methods
Google map
Masterclass
Dr. Katie Dainty, Dr. Joanne Goldman, & Leahora Rotteau
A qualitative research approach can be useful at various stages of a quality improvement project – from developing a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of your problem, to designing an intervention that addresses the factors influencing relevant practices, to evaluating both the intended and unintended impacts of your improvement efforts. However, the opportunities for a qualitative research approach to optimize a QI project are often missed. In this masterclass, we will cover the foundations of using qualitative approaches in QI and work with participants to think about how a qualitative research approach could complement the QI methodology within their individual projects.
Note: Students will be required to have a foundation of QI knowledge and to submit a QI project proposal/idea/work in progress at least two weeks prior to the session.

This introductory course combines short theory bursts with interactive exercises and small group discussions to make for an engaging and effective learning experience. Topics covered include:
- Choosing a QI project;
- QI measures;
- QI diagnostics (e.g., Fishbone diagram, process mapping, Pareto charts);

CQuIPS Training: Academic writing
Google map
Masterclass
Dr. Kaveh Shojania & Dr. Patricia Trbovich
Do you have a quality improvement project or research that you would like to write up for publication? In this four-hour interactive Masterclass, we will highlight the importance of starting with a strong abstract, instead of writing at the very end when you are sick of the paper and just want to get it submitted. A hastily thrown together abstract is a recipe for rejection. Moreover, a good abstract written early helps you vet the idea and provides an evolving roadmap for the project and manuscript as they unfold. You will have the opportunity to learn writing tips and strategies, as well as receive individualized feedback on your abstracts and manuscripts from experts and editors in the field of QI and patient safety. You will also learn tips on how to create value for your reader by making the reader care about your problem, and gain experience reviewing journal articles to help identify common pitfalls. This will be a fun interactive session with dedicated time for small group breakouts and individualized feedback.

CQuIPS Training: PDSA
Google map
Primer
Dr. Olivia Ostrow
Being able to undertake PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycles is the cornerstone of QI methods for iterative learning, developing and implementing change. However, PDSAs are not always undertaken authentically. This refresher will impress upon learners the importance of PDSA as an experimental study tool. It will also allow time for learners to reflect on the authenticity the PDSAs in their QI projects.

CQuIPS Training: Statistical Process Control
Google map
Primer
Dr. Brian Wong
This primer provides participants with an overview of run charts and control charts (i.e., statistical process control charts). Through the use of interactive exercises and illustrative examples, attendees will learn how to differentiate between various types of control charts and develop the necessary skills to analyze time-series data represented by run charts and control charts. These analytic skills will prepare participants to evaluate their QI interventions and demonstrate their impact on clinical processes and outcomes.
