Invigorating the Careers of Mid-Career Faculty: A workshop with Drs. Karen Leslie & Umberin Najeeb

SESSION OVERVIEW: Join us for an interactive workshop designed to provide a safe space for conversations about the challenges and needs of mid-career faculty members. While the session focuses on mid-career colleagues, everyone is welcome to attend.
STRUCTURE OF WORKSHOP
The workshop will provide a brief overview on the mentorship literature on mid-career faculty members and share common approaches to help prepare faculty members to critically observe, effectively question, and appropriately navigate this unique time in their professional lives. We will engage in rich discussions and learn from each other’s experiences. An approach of respectful dialogue is required of all participants.
WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: This session is designed specifically for mid-career faculty members (defined as 10+ years into their career) and institutional leaders in academic settings, however it is open to all.
OBJECTIVES:
• Describe the challenges and opportunities experienced by mid-career faculty
• Identify career development and mentoring needs of mid-career faculty
• Discuss approaches at the individual and organization level to address these needs
FACILITATORS BIO:
Dr. Karen Leslie is a staff pediatrician in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at SickKids and a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Leslie is a clinician-educator, involved in teaching and learning activities across many different contexts and learner groups, including undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing education and faculty development. In her clinical role, she oversees the SickKids Adolescent Substance Use Program and also works in the Gender Care Clinic as well as with the Adolescent Medicine Consultation Service. She is past director of the U of T Centre for Faculty Development and continues to be involved in faculty development work with national and international organizations, including the Association of Medical Education of Europe (AMEE). Her scholarly interests are in the areas of faculty development, career development and mentoring, as well as systems of care and outcomes for adolescents with substance use.
Dr. Umberin Najeeb is a staff internist in the division of General Internal Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and an Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto. She is the Vice Chair Culture & Inclusion and Co-Director of the Master Teacher Program in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Najeeb is a Clinician Educator whose scholarly interest focuses on supporting the transition and integration of Internationally Educated Health Professionals and advancing health professions education, particularly in curriculum design, faculty development, and mentorship. She developed and implemented a unique research-based longitudinal collaborative mentorship program for international medical graduates (IMGs) physicians and is the Faculty Lead for IMGs/IFTs Mentorship program. She teaches around the constructs of equity, diversity, inclusion, and allyship and contributes to research and policy work related to social justice and EDI in medical education. Her work in accommodating religious attire in sterile spaces, guidelines for search and recruitment with an intersectional lens, and facilitating late career transition process has garnered national and international interest.
