Topic: Women’s Neurology: What is it and Why Do We Need It?

Learning objectives:
1. Educate participants about the Division of Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh including training in medical school, residency and fellowship programs.
2. Teach participants about the various diagnoses and challenges encountered by physicians in the field of Women's Neurology. 
3. Emphasize the need for further research in this field. 

Women's Neurology is one of the fastest growing new subspecialties of neurology. The field of Women's Neurology includes men and women who wish to promote the health of women with neurologic illness in the various phases of life including adolescence, pregnancy, the post partum period and menopause. This lecture will describe what types of diseases are encountered and the challenges faced by physicians in the field. Opportunities for fellowships and research will be discussed. 

Janet Waters, MD, MBA received her medical degree  at The George Washington University, and her neurology training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She is the Division Chief of Women's Neurology at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, a large tertiary care center with over 12,000 deliveries per year. She is dedicated to providing excellent clinical care to a diverse population of women. She is has encouraged teaching and  research in the field and  has numerous publications including a text book in Women's Neurology. She conducted a course on Cases of Neurologic Illness in Pregnancy this year at the AAN in Seattle.  She established the first fellowship for training in Women's Neurology.
