Dr. Gordon Smith is the Kenneth and Diane Wright Professor and Chair of the Neurology Department at VCU. His NIH funded research team studies potential treatments for patients with peripheral neuropathy in the setting of diabetes, obesity and chemotherapy exposure. Dr. Smith has an interest in drug pricing policy and regularly advocates for measures that promise to reduce financial toxicity for our patients and society at large.

Topic: A Crisis in US Drug Pricing

Objectives:

  • Define financial toxicity and describe its impact on patients.
  • Describe a value-based drug pricing framework.
  • List three ways neurologists can engage for fair and value-based drug prices.

Patients with brain disease, particularly those with rare disorders, frequently experience financial toxicity. Physicians can play an important role in advocating for value based drug pricing and regulatory and legislative relief to serve our patients, their families and communities.
