Chair’s Column January 2026: Happy New Year

Happy New Year graphic

Dear Colleagues,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had an opportunity to rest and spend time with family and friends over the holiday period. As always, thanks to those who were on clinical service.

This column is a short one with just some brief updates:

  1. Strategic planning: The full report and plan will be available soon. Thanks to all for your contributions.
  2. Elements transition: The Elements team at Temerty Medicine has a new project manager who is creating an updated plan to support our faculty with the transition. Details to follow soon, but if you are interested in being part of a working group or serving as a superuser, please email dom.chair@utoronto.ca. And a reminder that WebCV is ending March 31, 2026, so you should download your CVs and all associated reports before then so that you do not lose data.
  3. Promotions: The dossiers for the 2026 cycle will be submitted to the Decanal Promotions Committee this month. My sincere thanks to all who supported this process, including the hospital mentors, administrators and committees, the Teaching Effectiveness Committee, the Departmental Promotions Committee, and of course, the candidates themselves. For the 2027 cycle, we are expecting a large number of candidates and are seeking additional members for the promotions committee. Please watch for an email with details and consider serving in this capacity. In addition, we are striking a working group to review the promotions processes to identify areas for improvement. If you are interested in participating in this group, please email dom.srpromotion@utoronto.ca or feel free to send me suggestions by email or via our anonymous comment link.
  4. Department of Medicine health systems research hub: In October, I wrote about a new departmental initiative related to health systems improvement. As a first step, we are creating an inventory of people who are working (or have an interest in doing so) in health systems improvement through research, quality improvement, education, advocacy, or other activities. This will be used to showcase the work that people are already doing across the department and provide opportunities for people to work with government agencies and other partners to address health systems questions. We know that many people are working in this area and encourage all interested faculty and trainees to sign up via this webform or by emailing brittany.wiwat@utoronto.ca.

Happy 2026! I’m looking forward to an excellent year with all of you.

Sincerely,
Moira
