Highlighting the 2025 DoM Culture & Inclusion award winners
This past June, the Department of Medicine recognized some of our faculty who have made significant and meaningful contributions to education, teaching, research, quality and innovation, humanism, mentorship and clinical practice with our annual awards. These awards celebrate our faculty members and recognize the local and global impact of our department.
Here’s what our Culture & Inclusion award winners had to say about receiving their award:
Robert Hyland Award for Excellence in Mentorship (Mid-Career) - Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe
"I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive the Robert Hyland Award for Excellence in Mentorship. Mentoring the next generation of scholars and clinicians has been the most rewarding part of my career, and I’ve been continually inspired by their passion, curiosity and fresh perspectives. This award reaffirms my commitment to growing as a mentor and supporting the journeys of many more to come."
Robert Hyland Award for Excellence in Mentorship (Late Career) - Dr. Helen MacKay
“I was extremely surprised and grateful to receive this year’s award. To be able to provide mentorship to others is a joy and is incredibly important to me. In turn, I am extremely grateful for those who provided, and continue to provide, support and mentorship to me. I have been incredibly fortunate to have amazing role models within the Department of Medicine to learn from."
Academy of Master Clinicians - Dr. Meyer Balter
“I had wonderful clinical mentors during my training at McGill who instilled me with a love for the art of medicine. I have always loved putting together the pieces of the puzzle at the bedside. It is an incredible honour and extremely meaningful to me to be recognized for this skill.”
Academy of Master Clinicians - Dr. Steven Shumak
Michael Gordon Award for Humanism in Medicine - Dr. Mena Gewarges
“This award means a great deal to me because it reflects the kind of doctor I strive to be: one who leads with compassion, listens deeply and sees the whole person behind the patient in front of me. Working in the cardiac ICU and with Indigenous communities across Ontario has taught me so much about trust, humility and intentionality in patient care. Co-founding the DICE mentorship program has been a way for me to help open doors for aspiring learners, in the hope that medicine continues to grow in empathy, diversity and inclusion. I am so grateful for this incredible recognition from the Department of Medicine and from my colleagues.”
