Dr. S. Andrew Josephson specializes in neurovascular and other neurologic disorders, caring for general neurology and stroke patients in the hospital as well as in clinic. He is the founder of UCSF's Neurohospitalist Program and specializes in difficult to diagnose inpatient neurologic conditions. He serves as Chair of the Department of Neurology and is the Carmen Castro Franceschi and Gladyne K. Mitchell Neurohospitalist Distinguished Professor. Dr. Josephson is widely considered to be one of the founders of the neurohospitalist movement and helped start the Neurohospitalist Society (NHS).
Topic: The Rise of the Neurohospitalist Movement and the Future of Inpatient Neurology
Objectives:
1. Describe the evolution of inpatient neurology and the pressures that drove inpatient and outpatient separation
2. Discuss measures of inpatient quality care including readmissions and quality and safety goals
3. Describe transitions of care challenges and solutions
Neurohospitalists have emerged in the last 15 years as the dominant model of inpatient neurologic care in the United States and many other countries. Dr. Josephson's talk will explore the advantages and challenges associated with this model of care and discuss the future of inpatient neurology going forward.
