David McAlpine

David is a South African-trained Emergency Physician. After completing medical school at the University of Cape Town, he undertook his Internship and Community Service years in under-resourced areas in rural South Africa with some of the highest rates of both HIV and trauma anywhere on earth. It was here that he discovered his love for both Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. After four years working in some of the busiest Accident & Emergency Departments in London in the UK, he returned to Cape Town and obtained his specialization in Emergency Medicine. Seeking further training in Critical Care, he applied for a Fellowship position at UHN. Over the past three years he has completed Fellowships in Critical Care, Advanced Echocardiography and Simulation-based Medical Education. He has a special interest in simulation-based medical education within the ICU and has  been involved in the development and implementation of a formal simulation curriculum for critical care medicine across. Other scholarly interests include establishing barriers and facilitators of simulation-based medical education as well as training Residents and Fellows in the use of advanced echocardiography. He has two wonderful but exhausting children and a deep love of live music – both of which keep him fully occupied outside of the hospital.
