Vice-Chair, Education
We are devoted to educating future physicians to pursue distinction, not only in biomedical and clinical sciences but also in the human elements of medicine: to treat everyone with excellence, compassion, and justice.
Dr. Lynfa Stroud currently serves as Division Head of General Internal Medicine (GIM) and Deputy Physician-in-Chief in the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (HSC). She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and a Scholar at the Wilson Centre, University Health Network, within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. She completed her MD and Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto, where she served as Chief Medical Resident at Sunnybrook HSC. She later earned a Master of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto.
As a clinician educator and researcher, Dr. Stroud studies assessment and feedback, with a particular focus on the influence of bias. Her research has been funded by agencies including the Medical Council of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and her work appears in leading journals such as Academic Medicine, Medical Education, and Advances in Health Sciences Education. Dr. Stroud has received numerous awards for education innovation and scholarship. She twice earned the Top Research in Medical Education Award from the International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE), RCPSC and the Journal of Graduate Medical Education. In 2025, she supervised the resident project that received the Top Resident Research Award from these same organizations. The Temerty Faculty of Medicine has presented her with the Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education – Development and Innovations, and the Department of Medicine has awarded her the Goldie Prize for Medical Education Scholarship and Research.
At Sunnybrook HSC, Dr. Stroud has taught and led across the continuum of medical education as Site Clerkship Director, Site Internal Medicine Program Director, and Co-Director of the Hospitalist Fellowship Program. She has received teaching awards from the Peters Boyd Academy and the Sunnybrook Department of Medicine for teaching at the pre-clerkship, clerkship, and postgraduate levels. In recognition of her many educational contributions, the Sunnybrook Department of Medicine awarded her the Leadership Award in 2018. Several years later, the Department honored her with the same award again, and Sunnybrook HSC presented her with the Leo N. Steven Excellence in Leadership Award, for leading the Department of Medicine’s in-patient response during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nationally, Dr. Stroud chairs the GIM Specialty Committee at the RCPSC, after serving as Vice-Chair and Regional Representative since 2018. She has served on the Royal College Board of Examiners for Medical Biochemistry and for GIM, and currently serves on the Internal Medicine Board. Since 2018 she has contributed as an invited member of the ICRE Planning Advisory Board.
