Aaron Izenberg

Dr. Izenberg completed the Master Teacher program through the University of Toronto in 2015, and MD at Queen’s University in 2007.  He completed subspecialty fellowship training at Harvard in neuromuscular medicine. He has been instrumental in running the Sunnybrook rapid response neurology clinic. He has developed a novel program at Sunnybrook for muscle biopsy and an outpatient gastrostomy process for patients with ALS. He was also a contributing author to the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines for ALS. Dr. Izenberg has demonstrated teaching effectiveness as the recipient of the William Goldie Award in Teaching, Department of Medicine for the city in 2023. He has received provincial recognition for his efforts in establishing personalized and precise treatment for adult patients with spinal muscular atrophy – the first time a genetic therapy has been administered for this condition in an adult hospital setting in Ontario. He is principal investigator on the TTEEN SMA Study (qualitative study associated with SMA transition clinic). This is a first-of-its kind clinic in Canada, with a focus on transitional care, imaging-guided therapy and gene-based therapy.

Dr. Izenberg has led the development of a new competency based neuromuscular fellowship across Toronto which has been running for the last 4 years and was appointed the Fellowship Director for the University of Toronto Division of Neurology. He is the Head of the neurology competence committee for the UofT Adult Neurology Program. He is now the Director of the EMG laboratory since 2022 and involved in several quality improvement initiatives there.
