During her studies at McGill University, Dr. Kelly received a B.Sc. (1974), and a M.Sc. in Physiology (1976). After obtaining her medical degree (1980), Dr. Kelly went on to study Internal Medicine (1985) and Endocrinology (1986), also at McGill University. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (1985). Dr. Kelly joined the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook & Women's in 1991. She also worked in the Department of Medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal, and was a Lecturer at McGill University. She is also very involved in workshops and teaching for faculty development.

Dr. Kelly is the University of Toronto Postgraduate Program Director for Endocrinology (1999 to present). She has a major interest and activity in medical education, particularly in areas of postgraduate education and continuing education. She has become a faculty member for the Bayer Institute for Healthcare Communication and gives frequent workshops on building communication skills. Her major clinical interests are in the management of type 1 diabetes, diabetes and pregnancy and thyroid disorders. Her personal interests include classical music, and her hobbies are travel, tennis.
