Dr. Cheung obtained his MD from the University of Toronto in 1980. He completed fellowship training in General Internal Medicine and Medical Biochemistry at University of Toronto in 1986. He then obtained the Certificate in Community Health in 1998. After working as a staff internist at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, Dr. Cheung joined the medical staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in 1993. His academic activities have centred around postgraduate and undergraduate medical education with a special interest in information technology.
Dr. Cheung established the Ambulatory Care Medical Clinic at the Department of Medicine in 1994. It is a longitudinal outpatient clinic that PGY1’s and PGY2’s attend one afternoon a week. He served as its Director until 2001. In 2001 he became the Site Director, Year 3 rotation in medicine at Sunnybrook. The responsibility included the organization, administration and supervision of the Medicine Rotation that close to 100 Year 3 and Year 4 students attended every year. In 2005, Dr Cheung handed over the coordination of the Year 4 rotation in medicine to Dr Choy. At present, Dr Cheung continues to supervise the 55 Year 3 students that rotate through medicine each year.
His interest in information technology has led him to be involved in the initial phase of the implementation of the Electronic Patient Record. He has taken advantage of the intranet and the internet to disseminate information to housestaff and students. More recently, he is planning research in how personal digital assistants (PDA’s) can facilitate patient care. Dr Cheung’s new interest is in patient safety. He has taken on initiatives to implement ordersets at Sunnybrook.
Dr. Cheung is well regarded as a clinical teacher within the Division of General Internal Medicine at this institution. He received a Problem- Based Learning Tutor Award in 1998 and Sunnybrook Department of Medicine Teaching Awards in 2000 and 2004.
