Description:

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an academic teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is offering a one to two year fellowship position in Cognitive & Movement Disorders Neurology.
Sunnybrook serves a population of >1 million people in the North and East Greater Toronto area, but is also a regional centre and receives referrals for patients suffering from cognitive and movement disorders from across Ontario. Two Sunnybrook clinics provide care for referred patients: the Cognitive & Movement Disorders Clinic, and the L.C. Campbell Cognitive Neurology Clinic. The fellowship program is headed by Dr. Mario Masellis.
Our team consists of 4 dedicated cognitive neurologists (Drs. Mario Masellis, Sandra E. Black, Sara Mitchell, and Benjamin Lam). Dr. Masellis also has training in movement disorders and focuses on both motor and non-motor aspects of these conditions. Drs. Masellis and Black are both internationally renowned clinicians and researchers in this clinical research discipline.
Clinical Responsibilities
In the first year, the fellow will attend up to 6 half-day weekly clinics in Cognitive & Movement Disorders Neurology, but including opportunities to participate in our Multidisciplinary Memory Clinic.  Clinical duties will also include inpatient cognitive and movement disorders consults, and biweekly inpatient consultation and rounds.  They will become astute at the diagnosis and management – both pharmacological and non-pharmacological - of the following conditions: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease with and without dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, corticobasal syndrome, progressive supranuclear palsy, and vascular cognitive impairment, as well as mixed dementias. They will also see and treat rarer early onset and genetic forms of these diseases as well.
Research Exposure:
Through participation in longitudinal studies evaluating the role of clinical patterns, genetic and neuroimaging biomarkers in predicting cognitive changes and changes in these patients, the fellow will be encouraged to work independently on all aspects of the research, but will meet with their supervisors on a regular basis to discuss progress and to obtain input and feedback.  They will be encouraged to develop a feasible research project, present and write up results.
Goals
The primary aims of this fellowship are three-fold:

  1. To provide the fellow with hands-on clinical training and mentorship in cognitive and movement disorders neurology to acquire clinical competency in these neurology subspecialties.
  2. To provide the fellow with the knowledge and experience to develop expertise in cognitive neurology including cognitive consequences of movement disorders and stroke, and to be able to communicate effectively through educational presentations and teaching to peers, other professionals and younger trainees.
  3. To provide appropriate exposure to clinical research in cognitive and movement disorders neurology and related clinical trials to enable the fellow to understand the important role of research in inspiring future care.
