Description:

The clinical-research Fellowship in concussion is a 1-2 year fellowship program that is open to applicants who have completed residency training in Neurology, Neurosurgery or Physical medicine and rehabilitation or are physicians holding a sports medicine certificate and wish to pursue further training in the clinical aspects and research of concussion. This is the first fellowship in sports concussion in Canada.
The fellowship is sponsored by the Canadian Sports Concussion Project at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto, and is an interdisciplinary program at the University of Toronto comprised of faculty, staff and trainees from neurology (cognitive and epilepsy), neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, radiology and neuropathology.  The funds for the first Fellowship are being provided by the Allison Project, a fundraising project of the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation and the Haggart Family.
Fellows receive intensive training in the evaluation and treatment of patients who have suffered from the concussion spectrum of disorders including acute concussion, post concussive syndrome, and brain degeneration such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. As part of their training they will acquire knowledge in cognitive/behavioral assessment, neuropsychology, imaging and treatment of patients with concussion.

In addition to clinical training, fellows will be engaged in research.  Investigators employ a variety of disciplines, including neurophysiology (EEG and MEG), neuropsychology, neuropathology and structural and functional neuroimaging.  Current areas of investigation include acute concussion, post concussive syndrome and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Ongoing studies include clinical protocols as well as translational research grounded in basic neurobiology and the cognitive/affective neurosciences.
