Alice Kam
Dr. Alice Kam is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Toronto, and an affiliate scientist at the KITE Research Institute at UHN. Her academic career is rooted in human- centered clinical education research, with a focus on designing inclusive, AI-integrated learning systems to enhance compassionate care.
She is the creator of the Spiral Integrated Human Centered Design (SPIRAL), a co-design methodology recognized
through national and international awards, including a CIHR Planning and Dissemination Grant, the CAME Rising Star
Award, and the Department of Medicine Strategic Medical Education Scholarship. Her research promotes system-level
transformation through interprofessional collaboration and pedagogical critical reflexivity.
Dr. Kam supervises numerous students and residents across Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and interprofessional levels
and serves on committees for the Royal College, American Congress Rehabilitation Medicine, Association of Academic
Physiatrists , and AMEE (The International Association for Health Professions Education). Her work has been published in
leading journals such as The Clinical Teacher and CMEJ, and presented at conferences including ICAM, ACRM, and
AMEE. Dr. Kam's teaching philosophy is grounded in constructivism and adaptive mentorship, supporting learners’ growth
through individualized feedback and co-learning. With a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and critical reflexivity, Dr.
Kam’s work integrates patient, caregiver, and learner voices into system design—shaping the future of compassionate
healthcare education in Canada and beyond.
