Angela Cheung
ANGELA M. CHEUNG, MD, PhD, FRCP(C)
Dr. Angela Cheung is the Director of University Health Network Osteoporosis Program, the Associate Director of University Health Network Women’s Health Program, and Associate Professor of Medicine, Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, Public Health Sciences, and Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto. She obtained her M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1988, and her Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 1997. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and is a board-certified internist in the United States. She has been in clinical practice for the past 15 years, and specializes in osteoporosis and postmenopausal women’s health including cardiovascular diseases and cancer prevention.
Dr. Cheung has received many honors and awards throughout her medical career for her excellence in clinical work, research and education. She currently holds a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) mid-career award in postmenopausal health and an Ontario Premier’s Research Excellence Award for innovations in postmenopausal health. Other recent ones include the University Health Network Department of Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. She holds full membership in a number of professional associations including the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, the American College of Physicians, the North American Menopause Society, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, the Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Society of Medical Decision Making.
Dr. Cheung’s research interests are in the area of postmenopausal health, especially in osteoporosis, cancer prevention, cardiovascular diseases, decision-making, and evaluation of new therapies and technologies pertaining to women. She has more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and currently holds grants from CIHR and National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). She is a frequent speaker on osteoporosis and women’s health issues, and has presented widely at national and international scientific meetings. She also sits on various women’s issues and gender issues committees across Ontario, and serves as a consultant to the Ontario Ministry of Health and the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health on postmenopausal women’s health issues, and a consultant to the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada. As a member of the Women's Health Council of Ontario Osteoporosis Working Group, she completed the report of the Strategic Action Working Group on Osteoporosis entitled, A Framework and Strategy for the Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis. In addition, she worked with the Canadian Task Force for Preventive Health, and the Osteoporosis Canada to publish the current 2002 and 2004 osteoporosis guidelines.
