Candace McNaughton is an Associate Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. McNaughton is an emergency medicine physician.

Dr. McNaughton received a BS in Microbiology from Brigham Young University and an MD from Washington University in St. Louis. She completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System VA Medical Center, MPH at Vanderbilt University, and PhD in Epidemiology at Vanderbilt University. Dr. McNaughton also holds board certification in Addiction Medicine from the American Board of Preventative Medicine. She was faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from 2011-2021 and the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System VA Medical Center from 2012-2021. She joined the University of Toronto in 2021.

Dr. McNaughton’s research includes validation of mass spectrometry to measure serum concentrations of cardiovascular medications; survey design, validation, and implementation; clinical trials (including diagnostic and therapeutic trials, as well as an ED-based intervention to improve medication adherence); and health services research. Her research through the Sunnybrook Research Institute and ICES addresses medication adherence and healthcare use in acute heart failure, also with an interest in the impact of long COVID on healthcare use and outcomes. She has received research support from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Department of Defense, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health, as well as the Heart Failure Society of America and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
