Carmela Tartaglia

Dr. Tartaglia MD MSc is a Clinician Scientist, Professor is a cognitive/behavioral neurologist at the UHN Memory Clinic and Scientist at the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases. She holds the Marion and Gerald Soloway Chair in Brain Injury and Concussion Research. Dr. Tartaglia uses a multi-modal approach that combines biofluid assessments and imaging for characterizing the neural substrates of cognitive-behavioral changes in neurodegenerative disease with a focus on frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and atypical Alzheimer’s disease as well as delayed effects of concussion.

Her research program strives to identify biomarkers for early detection of disease and further understanding of the molecular changes that may underlie the cognitive, behavioral, and motor impairments that occur in FTLD and Chronic traumatic encephalopathy. She is involved in FTLD research and am a site PI for the International studies ALLFTD and 4-repeat tauopathy neuroimaging initiative; and an investigator in GENFI. She is involved in clinical trials in AD, FTD and PSP. She has published over 240 papers. Dr. Tartaglia helped establish a Research Centre of excellence in PSP at UHN.

She has led numerous studies that seek to understand the contribution of co-pathology to the heterogeneity of presentation and progression across neurodegenerative diseases. She was the recipient of the 2021 William Goldie Award in Research, University of Toronto. She is currently the director of the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance.
