Daniel Khalaf
Dr Daniel Khalaf is a Medical Oncologist at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre with a clinical practice in genito-urinary tract and head and neck malignancies. He completed medical school in Sherbrooke Quebec and his residency in Oncology and Hematology at the University of Montreal. He did a 2-year fellowship at BC Cancer in Vancouver in genito-urinary tract Medical Oncology, and clinical and translational research.
His principal area of research is in advanced prostate cancer, and he his work has focused on the determination of clinical and genomic prognostic and predictive biomarkers for systemic treatments. He was involved in early correlative studies leading to the validation of circulating tumour DNA as a prognostic biomarker in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), and he received a Prostate Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award for this work. His research furthered the understanding of the prognostic significance of recurrent genomic abnormalities relevant to prostate cancer including BRCA gene alterations and HSD3 1 polymorphisms. His clinical studies of novel Androgen-Receptor Pathway Inhibitors (ARPIs) has informed the current standard of care including the recommend treatment sequence and their utilization in elderly patients. He has an interest in embedding patient reported outcome (PRO) tools in clinical research and standard clinical care particularly of elderly patients treated for advanced prostate cancer.
His ongoing research includes the post-marketing investigation of adverse events of ARPIs and dose-optimization, particularly in the elderly patient population. He continues his work investigating novel therapeutics integrating biomarker research and PROs. He is also evaluating the implementation of PRO tools in clinic to enhance patient care and safety.
