David Tang-Wai

Dr. Tang-Wai is a professor in neurology and geriatric medicine at the University of Toronto, where he holds the inaugural appointment as the Slamen-Fast Chair in Neurology. He received his MD degree from McGill University. He completed his neurology residency and behavioral neurology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Tang-Wai established the first autoimmune encephalitis clinic in Toronto and, with Dr. A. Fasano, an interdisciplinary normal pressure hydrocephalus clinic – both at the Toronto Western Hospital. He is the current Division Director of neurology at the University of Toronto and former program director of the adult neurology residency program. In addition, he was the chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance (TDRA) and was the interim director of the TDRA.

He is an award-winning educator and master clinician. He has received multiple local and international teaching awards and nominations from undergraduate and postgraduate trainees – including the AAN AB Baker Teacher Recognition Award, the University of Toronto President’s Teaching Award, The Department of Medicine Teacher of the Year Award, and the inaugural Department of Medicine’s Academy of Master Clinicians. Dr. Tang-Wai's research interests include the atypical presentations of Alzheimer's disease – especially posterior cortical atrophy, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and the autoimmune encephalopathies.
