Gaspard Montandon
Biography: Dr. Gaspard Montandon received his PhD at Laval University in Quebec for his work investigating the impact of caffeine on breathing and was a Parker B. Francis Fellow at the University of Toronto until he was appointed at St. Michael’s Hospital.
Appointments: Dr. Montandon is a Staff Scientist at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science - St. Michael’s Hospital and holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Division of Respirology - Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He also holds a graduate appointment in the Institute of Medical Sciences and is a member of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology iBEST.
Research interests: Dr. Montandon combines biomedical and clinical research to understand the neural control of breathing and disorders such as respiratory depression by opioid drugs and sleep-disordered breathing (http://www.gasplab.com). His main research focuses on understanding how opioid drugs affect breathing and to find novel therapies to prevent respiratory depression without reducing opioid analgesia.
Teaching: Dr. Montandon teaches undergraduate courses in Respiratory Physiology at the Department of Physiology, graduate courses at the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics.
Support: As a Parker B. Francis Fellow and with support from the Canadian Lung Association, the Ontario Thoracic Society, and CIHR, Dr. Montandon has developed a strategic research program aiming to understand the neural circuits regulating breathing and opioid-induced respiratory depression.
