Jeffrey Jirsch

Dr. Jirsch completed a Master’s degree at Queen’s, and MD at the University of Toronto. He completed fellowships at McGill and Columbia University in EEG/Epilepsy. Dr. Jirsch was employed at the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor from 2009-2016 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. Dr. Jirsch has since joined Sunnybrook Hospital and the Neurology Division in January 2022. He has advanced training in EEG as well as Epilepsy, and he has been one of the leaders in Canada in ICU monitoring. Dr. Jirsch has published over 60 peer-reviewed publications, including 31 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. Dr. Jirsch has had regular contributions to undergraduate and graduate medical education over his career and was previously the program director for Neurology training program for the University of Alberta. He has been actively involved in Royal College specialty committee in Neurology and served 5 years on its examination committee. 

Dr. Jirsch is exceptionally well-trained in his field of EEG monitoring as well as epilepsy. As an established educator and interested in training students in new processes of quality care. During his brief time at Sunnybrook to date, he has started a first seizure clinic servicing Emergency Department patients, has developed an out-patient Seizure Disorder Clinic for established Epilepsy cases, has initiated monthly teaching rounds in EEG for medical residents and technologist trainees, has given numerous invited lectures for a variety of medical departments, and has been awarded a large peer-reviewed research grant as a co-PI through collaborations with local Critical Care colleagues. He is the neurophysiology lead for EEG.
