Dr. Alonso graduated from Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona, Spain) Medical School in 2000. He undertook his specialist cardiology training in Badajoz and Madrid, Spain. He was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist in Badajoz in 2008. In 2009 he relocated to London (United Kingdom) to gain further expertise in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) where he was appointed as a Consultant in Congenital heart disease and Pulmonary Hypertension in 2012. He was the lead clinician for inpatient care and the coordinator of the advanced ACHD heart failure service which included the joint ACHD-transplant clinic at Harefield Hospital. Over the last 3 years he was the lead of the Congenital Heart Disease Transition Services.

Dr. Alonso led the ACHD International Fellowship program at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He has extensive teaching experience with both undergraduates and postgraduates.He is also part of the Faculty of several on-line Masters in congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension. He has a Masters degree in Medical Statistics (University of Barcelona) and in Pulmonary Hypertension (Madrid).

Dr Alonso is invited to lecture internationally and has published numerous peer review papers across a wide range of topics in cardiac diseases. In addition, he is a reviewer for several international journals including Circulation, Heart, International Journal of Cardiology European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging and Revista Española de Cardiologia

Dr. Alonso’s research interests include the management of advanced heart failure in patients with congenital heart disease and the long-term sequelae of single ventricle physiology.

Dr. Alonso is member of European Society of Cardiology, Spanish Society of Cardiology and British Congenital Cardiac Association. He is also member of the Pulmonary Hypertension and Congenital Heart Disease working groups of the European Society of Cardiology.
