Dr Rajat Kumar has joined the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre on 16 January 2018.Prior to this, he was working at CancerCare Manitoba, Winnipeg, as a hematologist and blood and marrow transplant (BMT) physician since April 2008. There he had served as the Leukemia/BMT ward director and service chief, at the Health Sciences Centre campus. He was also a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Apart from his clinical role, he held a number of administrative appointments, including that of medical director of the clinical trials unit. He was awarded the "Prix d’excellence / Specialist of the Year" award for Region 2 (Saskatchewan and Manitoba) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2013.
He is originally from India, where he completed his training in Internal medicine from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. He subsequently obtained postgraduate training in clinical hematology in England at Guy's hospital (London) and at Princess Margaret in the BMT program. While in India, he had set up a BMT program in the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) Delhi. He subsequently served as a professor of hematology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, where he also set up a BMT program. He was Vice-President of the Indian Society of Hematology and blood Transfusion, at the time of his relocation to Winnipeg, Canada. He subsequently did a Master’s in health economics, policy and management (HEPM) from the London School of Economics, UK, in 2012. His special interests are myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), leukemias, and transplants in the elderly, with a focus on the health economic aspects. His present appointment is that of a Clinician Investigator and Professor, to the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto.
