Location
Sunnybrook Health Science Centre

Dr. Kingston is recognized as an expert in headache as a Fellow of the American Headache Society. He is passionate about increasing education in this field and improving patient outcomes. Since full appointment in 2020, Dr. Kingston’s headache clinic has been growing at Sunnybrook.  The following initiative have already been achieved:

  • large volume clinic with increased access for patients in the Sunnybrook catchment area with headache disorders.
  • start of Canada’s (and possibly the world’s) first Headache in Pregnancy Clinic – direct and rapid access to headache care for pregnant patients with the aim to reduce morbidity, improve quality of life and reduce ER/OB triage visits. Several research projects are underway to monitor outcomes (this will be the largest single site cohort reported)
  • inpatient consultation for headache from neurovascular/stroke teams with the aim of reducing opioid usage and dependence and increase skills for learners in the management of complex patients.
  • new Headache Medicine Fellowship program started in 2023/2024 with a second fellow confirmed for 2024/2025.
  • the division of neurology’s first nurse practitioner has started part time in headache which has been a tremendous improvement in patient care, access and chronic disease management.
  • a novel multi-disciplinary program has been started between headache, anesthesia and neuroradiology to provide care for patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension. This includes relatively novel treatments and techniques which are not available anywhere else in Canada.
  • ongoing collaboration with the pain medicine residency program (their trainees complete a month long block with Sunnybrook’s Headache clinic).

Dr. Kingston has taken over as the divisional lead for neurology education.
