Global Health Education Initiative (GHEI) – Internal Medicine Cohort

A two-year certificate program providing local training and encouraging global impact.

Year 1 of the program begins September 

The GHEI program is led by Postgraduate Medical Education. The development of the curriculum involved input and consultation with more than 100 University of Toronto and Toronto partners and global health leaders. Over 100 global health faculty contribute to the current GHEI program and include over 200 GHEI participants from over 20 programs and specialties. Establishment of a GHEI Alumni Alliance; a network of GHEI graduates and next generation global health leadership, led by PGME supports continuing education in global health.

Global health is a conceptual framework to understand how expressions of health and illness are impacted by underlying determinants to affect world populations. In Toronto, the most multicultural city in the world, global health is local health and local health is global health. Global Health knowledge and skills are useful in everyday practice in Canada and are critical to solving the most challenging health problems affecting individuals and communities around the globe. The Global Health Education Initiative, led by Post Graduate Medical Education, is an exciting initiative, which fills a long recognized gap in the training of health professionals who are interested in making an impact in global health. It adds to informal mentoring by providing a structured, evidence-based, and carefully designed curriculum in a small group format - an approach to global health education unique to this program and to the university.

The University of Toronto is home to one of the largest concentrations of Global Health leaders in the world. As GHEI participants, you will have access to these individuals who have committed to sharing their expertise and passion for global health with you. By taking part in this program you will be part of a growing community of professionals dedicated to using more innovative and effective methods to address the needs of marginalized populations at home, and underserved populations abroad. You will also be contributing to the fulfillment of the Faculty of Medicine’s mandate towards social accountability within and outside the borders of the University, the City of Toronto and globally. Balancing the demands of residency with the GHEI program may not be easy, but your future patients and their communities will thank you.

Program Format

  • You will be asked to complete readings (via U of T online portal), pre and post session quizzes and evaluations (via Survey Monkey)
  • The GHEI is delivered as a series of modules. Each module is composed of two to three interactive sessions of three hours each or combined into a full day session.
  • The following themes are incorporated in the content and delivery of each module: global health leadership, values in global health, identifying and mitigating health inequalities and inequities, inter-professional collaboration, vulnerable and marginalized populations, cross-cultural communication, capacity building and education, social responsibility and accountability in education plus research and practise.
  • To complete the IM Cohort GHEI program you will need to complete three Core Modules and three Elective Modules.
  • You might need one year, two years or more to complete the program; the GHEI program is flexible to accommodate your busy and changing schedules.
  • You will be asked to attend the Opening Sessions and Module 1C plus one additional Core Modules and three Elective Modules to complete the IM Cohort GHEI Progam.
  • Modules are offered from 6pm-9pm on weekdays with three modules offered on a Saturday from 9am - 3:30pm.
  • All modules and sessions take place in the 6th Floor Boardroom, 500 University Avenue (west side of University just north of Dundas)
