Hematology Institute

Welcome to the Hematology Institute Website at the University of Toronto

This website is designed to guide referring physicians seeking assistance in managing patients with hematologic issues. The information, including but not limited to, text, graphics, images and other material contained on this website, are for informational purposes only and is intended for physicians practicing in the province of Ontario. Material on this site is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

Note that any patient presenting with a Hematologic Emergency should be promptly referred to their nearest emergency department; assistance may also be sought by contacting the on-call hematologist through that hospital’s switchboard.

Perform Preliminary Investigations

  1. Review the Referral Guides. These guides are designed to assist referring physicians in managing their patients and can help determine:
    • When to seek advice from a hematologist
    • When urgent medical attention may be required (ie., assessment in an emergency department)
    • What preliminary investigations are needed for a complete referral

Following these guides prior to requesting a consultation may reduce wait times.

Request a Consult

  1. Request an eConsult
    • eConsults allow hematologists to provide recommendations to the referring physician without directly assessing the patient
    • Sign into the Ontario Telemedicine Network to request an eConsult.
    • Note that requests for new accounts may take 1-2 days to process.
  2. Request a Full Consult
    • Use the directory to find an adult hematologist with the appropriate clinical practice (referrals to the Hospital for Sick Children for pediatric patients can be made here).  Consults may be offered to patients either virtually or in-person
    • Note that referrals are subject to catchment restrictions.  As academic hospitals have a mandate to provide local and specialized care, most community referrals should be to community hematologists, rather than those affiliated with the University of Toronto. To find a community hematologist in your area, the Ocean network may be used as a resource.
