The Internal Medicine (IM) Scheduling Working Group, chaired by Dr. Zachary Feilchenfeld, site director of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has been established to review the current processes and procedures of scheduling internal medicine residents. Through optimizing resident, site and rotation needs, the goal of the working group is to improve the internal medicine resident learning experience.
In partnership and consultation with IM residents, the group has established a set of priorities with the aim of addressing concerns with current scheduling processes, including:
Re-establishing PGY1 subspecialty rotation choice
Evaluating PGY3 schedule support around Royal College examinations
Improving the vacation scheduling process
Improving scheduling consistency so that there are more consistent numbers of residents on rotations block-to-block
Adding supports around the administration and timelines of the scheduling process
Fostering a clearer understanding of scheduling rules and processes for all residents
In August 2023, the Working Group drafted a report outlining the eight key priorities guiding their and key scheduling stakeholders work, with measurable success for most recommended changes. A huge amount of work was put into making the scheduling process so successful for the 2023-24 year and we thank the group for their ongoing dedication to supporting our postgraduate trainees.
