The AFMC Clinical Teacher Award recognizes excellence in clinical teaching by an individual faculty member in a Faculty of Medicine in Canada. This award was established in 2014 and is intended to emphasize the importance of clinical teaching in academic medicine. Exceptional faculty clinicians with an M.D. or another health professional degree who demonstrate vision, innovation and leadership in clinical teaching in their faculty of medicine are eligible.

The Dr. Robert Conn Resident Advocate Award was created in 2020 and is named in honour of PARO’s Chief Executive Officer in recognition of his role as the exemplar MD of resident advocacy. The Dr. Robert Conn Resident Advocate Award is bestowed upon one individual in the province who has consistently advocated on behalf of residents and resident issues, within their role as a clinician or teacher.

Neurologists are frequently confronted by decisions in clinical medicine that are confounded by ethical issues, such as the surrogate decision-making process for patients with aphasia or dementia, whether to participate in physician-assisted suicide, the evaluation and counseling for genetic disorders, and end-of-life care for neurologically impaired patients. There is growing awareness of racial and socioeconomic health disparities as an ethical challenge facing neurologists and other physicians. A solid grounding in clinical bioethics can be invaluable to address these challenges. This elective will provide opportunities to develop the skills necessary to approach ethical problems during your education, research activities, and clinical practice, and prepare you to share what you have learned with your peers and patients.
