For the second time this year, the Department of Medicine recognized some of our outstanding residents who have contributed to education, research, mentorship and patient care with Resident Awards. Congratulations to all of our award winners!
These recipients will be celebrated at the DoM's Graduation celebration on June 16, 2025.
Outstanding Research Trainee Award
Yaanu Jeyakumar, PGY3 Internal Medicine
"I am deeply honoured to receive the Department of Medicine Outstanding Research Trainee Award. I am sincerely grateful to my research mentors for their invaluable support and guidance. As I begin my fellowship in Endocrinology & Metabolism at the University of Toronto this July, I look forward to building on my experiences and contributing to research that drives innovation and impact for patients."
Outstanding Research Trainee Award (Graduate Scholar)
Natasha Lane, PGY5 Geriatric Medicine
"I’ve spent the past 10+ years balancing clinical training with my research program aimed at improving health and quality of life for older adults with dementia and depression. I am honoured by this acknowledgement from the Department of Medicine and inspired to continue working with my many collaborators and mentors to build a better healthcare system for older adults."
Resident Teacher of the Year Award
Andriy Katyukha, PGY3 Internal Medicine
"Contributing to the education of my junior colleagues continues to be one of the greatest privileges of my training - an experience made all the more meaningful by the wisdom, generosity, and support of my mentors and peers. I have come to appreciate that teaching takes many forms. Sometimes it’s a structured whiteboard session, but more often, it’s a friendly hallway conversation, an insightful question answered during rounds, or a thoughtful discussion shared over a coffee during a busy night on call. I believe that it is in these small, genuine moments of connection that some of the most lasting lessons are learned. I am deeply humbled by this recognition and profoundly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our incredible community within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto."
Award for Excellence in Mentorship
Malini Hu, PGY4 Internal Medicine and Chief Medical Resident (Women's College Hospital)
"Receiving the Excellence in Mentorship Award is a deeply meaningful honour. It reminds me that mentorship is not about having all the answers, but about walking alongside others with care, presence and intention. I have been incredibly fortunate to learn from mentors who modeled that kind of guidance for me. To now pay that forward, and to be trusted by others in their own journeys, has been one of the most rewarding parts of residency."
Emerging Clinician Award
Carolyn Tan, PGY7 Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology and Geriatric Medicine
"This award reflects the many people who have shaped how I think and practice - insightful teachers, candid mentors, collaborative colleagues, and patients who often teach more than textbooks. As I (finally!) start as a staff physician, it's a meaningful reminder of the privilege of working with people who care deeply about doing the right thing - even when the evidence is limited, the medications many, and ConnectingOntario won't load."
