Mentorship Matters September 2022: Dr. Danny Panisko

Culture & Inclusion

This edition of DoM Mentorship Matters features Dr. Danny Panisko, recipient of the 2021 Robert Hyland Award for Excellence in Mentorship

Honouring the work of mentor-extraordinaire, Dr. Danny Panisko is the perfect way to launch our new coloumn, Mentorship Matters. To celebrate Danny's work, we would like to share some words from his fellow faculty members, who careers he has helped shape:

From the beginning of my career, he made himself available for discussion of challenging cases and ethical dilemmas that I encountered. The innumerable pearls of wisdom and knowledge that he generously shared with me during those first few years have served as a foundation for my practice. Danny is truly a role model I have tried to emulate when interacting with junior colleagues. […] When Dr. Rob Sergeant passed away, this was a very difficult experience for many members of the GIM family. Danny again supported me, and accompanied me to Dr. Sergeant’s family visitation, remaining by my side the entire time. Danny and Rob were very close, and I know Danny experienced a great sense of pain and loss, but made sure to support a younger colleague even during this trying time. […] In summary, Dr. Daniel Panisko, or “Danny” as he is more affectionately known, is one of the very best mentors of faculty in the entire University. He has done so for decades with empathy and consistency. He goes above and beyond for all his learners and colleagues. He is instrumental to the Toronto Western Hospital being recognized as a leader in medical education and I truly believe the impact of his mentorship will be felt for decades.” - Dr. Tarek Abdelhalim

“Danny never seeks the spotlight for himself, but promotes others and is quietly, efficiently supportive, and probably doesn’t even realize what a profound impact he has had on so many people.” - Dr. Moira Kapral

Congratulations and thank you Danny!
