Obstetric Medicine is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine that focuses on the management of medical disorders in pregnant women. This discipline aims to optimize the medical issues in women prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. In this fellowship, trainees will rotate through a side variety of subspecialty clinics that focus purely on the pregnant patient. These include endocrinology, hematology, cardiology, neurology, and nephrology. In addition, fellows do inpatient consults on the antenatal and labour and delivery ward. Fellows will also acquire the knowledge for the safe prescribing of drugs in pregnancy and lactation. This fellowship has been available at the University of Toronto for 15 years, and is open to physicians with a background in General Internal Medicine as well as to subspecialists who wish to acquire a broad skill set in the management of a wide variety of medical disorders, such as hypertension, preeclampsia, diabetes, cardiac disease and renal disease. Fellows will be involved in case conferences, teaching rounds, and will also be required to supervise more junior trainees. Research is encouraged, although is not a mandatory requirement of the training program.
