Description:

The University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Toronto offer an exceptional training environment for graduating fellows seeking to establish or further advance an academic career in Transplant/Oncology Infectious Diseases.

The program follows the curriculum recommended by the AST Infectious Diseases Community of Practice and is further enriched under the leadership and mentorship of internationally recognized experts: Drs. Shahid Husain, Coleman Rotstein, Atul Humar, Deepali Kumar, Sasan Hosseini, Victoria Hall, and Asma Syed.

Two training tracks are available:

  • A one-year clinical track for fellows pursuing a career as academic clinicians.
  • A two-year research track for fellows aiming to develop an academic research career. It is subject to research mentors approval and available funding.

The program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada under the Area of Focused Competence in Solid Organ Transplantation training track. Successful graduates who meet eligibility criteria are awarded the DRCPSC designation (Diplomate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). Further details can be found at:

Clinical Training
For inpatient consultations, fellows rotate between two specialized sites: one focusing on solid organ transplantation (SOT) and another dedicated to allo- and auto-stem cell transplantation, hematologic malignancies (including CAR-T cell therapy), and solid tumors. Overall, about 8 months of the fellowship are spent on the inpatient rotations. The outpatient component consists of a weekly longitudinal clinic held throughout the duration of the fellowship. In addition, fellows are expected to undertake electives across a variety of clinical disciplines to further expand their knowledge and proficiency in Transplant and Oncology Infectious Diseases.

Academic Development
The program includes a well-structured, interactive weekly lecture series, delivered by invited speakers, core faculty, and fellows, covering both core and advanced topics in Transplant/Oncology ID. Research-track fellows are encouraged to actively engage in ongoing research initiatives and to develop independent projects. Comprehensive training in clinical, translational, and laboratory research methodologies is supported through robustly funded clinical and laboratory-based research programs in Transplant/Oncology ID.
