Description:

This is a subspecialty hepatology fellowship with a specific focus in clinical care and research in patients with cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases. The fellowship will include ambulatory clinical care in the pre-transplant setting with Drs. Hirschfield and Gulamhusein as well as in the post transplant ambulatory setting. With supervision, fellows will be taught to and expected to independently manage patients with the spectrum of complex autoimmiune liver disease from early to advanced including in the peri and post transplant settings. There is an expectation of academic productivity through involvement in our clinical and translational research program and can include initiatives in QI, written reviews, clinical research and involvement in clinical trials.

The fellow will embark on a clinical research advanced hepatology fellowship with an ambulatory focus. They will be exposed specifically to patients with autoimmune liver disease. 50% Research: Related to New Fellowship Application Department of Medicine autoimmune liver disease (cohort studies, experimental medicine, trials)50% AILD clinic (approximately two autoimmune focused clinic per week)

Fellows will attend all educational rounds alongside the general hepatology fellowship and are expected to provide scheduled teaching rounds to junior trainees at educational rounds at least once in the year.

To acquire and demonstrate detailed knowledge and focus on autoimmune liver disease and familiarizing her/himself with publications in this area and to develop verbal and written communication skills. The fellow should work effectively in a group setting with nurses, research coordinators, admin staff and others and to understand the most cost effective methods of evaluating patients with autoimmune disease. -To make decisions about resource allocation for patients attending the hepatology (autoimmune) clinic. To complete a review paper on a topic of his choice (autoimmune related).-To identify and pursue clinical research opportunities based on patient experiences of living with primary autoimmune disease. The fellow will also attend weekly clinics at the Toronto General Hospital (Toronto Centre for Liver Disease) where they will assess, treat and follow-up patients of the clinic with autoimmune disease and will interact ethically with co-workers. They will also help patients understand the funding climate for drugs in Ontario and educate patients about their disease status during clinical encounters.
