Description:

During the clinical echo fellowship year at the Mount Sinai Hospital, there will be a focus on both clinical education and research. The goal will be to achieve level three training in echocardiography.  This will result in the ability to direct an echocardiographic Laboratory, train others, and conduct advanced research in echocardiography. This will involve exposure and advanced training in transthoracic echo, transesophageal echo, and 3D imaging, tissue doppler, stress echo both dobutamine and exercise, and strain imaging. With regards to stress echocardiography, the echo fellow’s role will involve patient selection, selection of the stress modality, supervision of the stress tests, as well as integration of the data obtained to prepare a comprehensive report. Competency in contrast echocardiography will involve both rest and stress imaging, as well as the advanced knowledge of administrative protocols, fiscal principals, and specific machine settings to optimize quality. The level 3 echo fellow will be involved in the study of myocardial mechanics and strain imaging, and this involves image acquisition as well as image processing. The fellows will also be aware of the appropriate use criteria in the utilization of echocardiography. The competencies in these various areas of echocardiography’s will be further developed from an educational standpoint. They will be involved in development of case logbooks, conference and case presentations, and training portfolios. They will also have an opportunity to participate in a longitudinal research project during their training year.
