Title: “Is it Time for MS Patients to Receive Cognitive Rehabilitation?”
Learning objectives:
- Participants will obtain a broad knowledge of cognitive impairments in persons with MS and its relationship to everyday functional abilities.
- Participants will become familiar with the behavioral data supporting cognitive rehabilitation in persons with MS
- Participants will become familiar with the brain imaging data associated with improvements in cognition with cognitive rehabilitation in persons with MS
It is now well established that many if not most persons with MS suffer from some degree of cognitive impairment. So, what clinicians need to know is what treatments are available and are they effective. This presentation will focus on the evidence supporting cognitive rehabilitation approaches to cognitive impairment in persons with MS. The talk will first broadly outline the nature of cognitive impairment in MS and its impact on functional activity. This will be followed by behavioral and brain imaging research supporting cognitive rehabilitation techniques in persons with MS. Data on pharmaceutical and exercise approaches will be briefly discussed. The talk will provide clinicians and researchers with practical information and guidance in the understanding, impact, and treatment options available for MS patients with cognitive impairment.
