CFD Best Practice in Education Rounds: Person-Centred Care: Broadening the Curriculum Beyond Bioscience
The roles that physicians are called upon to perform in our current competency frameworks depend on concepts, theories, and ways of knowing that come from the social sciences and humanities. These forms of knowledge are particularly critical to the provision of compassionate, equitable patient care. However, they have only recently been introduced into Canadian medical education, so is it any wonder that medical educators continue to express uncertainty about what and how to teach in these areas?
- To identify the links between traditional medical knowledge, current medical education, and the provision of compassionate, equitable medical care
- To highlight concepts from the social sciences and humanities that underpin an understanding of person-centred care
- To introduce an approach to teaching for compassion and social justice
