Objectives:

By the end of this presentation participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the difference between empathy and compassion.
  2. Develop some tools that will help faculty and learners support their personal well-being in the face of suffering.
  3. Enhance their understanding of value of fostering of self-compassion in delivering compassionate patient-centered care.

Facilitator:

Dr. Dubravka Dodig is a neurologist at Toronto Western Hospital and has been a consultant with William Osler Health System since 2011. She earned her medical degree from McMaster University and completed her Neurology residency and Fellowships in Neuromuscular and Electrophysiology at McGill University. Dr. Dodig is a member and diplomat of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular Medicine and the Canadian Society of Clinical Electrophysiologists. She has completed mindfulness and compassion training at Sarana Institute and Stanford’s CCARE. In 2025, she will start a chaplaincy program at Upaya Zen Center under Roshi Joan Halifax. Her work focuses on advancing neurology, neuromuscular disorders, and the integration of compassion and mindfulness into medical education and patient care. Dr. Dodig has published numerous journal articles, contributed to a textbook on Women’s Neurology, and speaks internationally in academia and industry.
