Topic: Beyond mental health: intergenerational and interhemispheric perspectives of the future in a time of climate crisis

Description: Life on the planet is threatened by modern human civilization. The individual and social angst associated with this threat of extinction takes many forms, some of which can be addressed by a “mental health framework”. Authentically addressing hope and despair will be critical to our future. Intergenerational relationships (case presentation), broader perspectives on the role of cognitive neuroscience, and attention to healthy inequity will be key.

Learning objectives:
(1) Appreciate different perspectives on climate angst from a case presentation of an intergenerational collaborative pair of health practitioners
(2) Examine the role of mental health practitioners in addressing current environmental and social challenges using the lenses of interhemispheric differences and attentional mechanisms
(3) Describe aspects of deaths of despair that relate to the climate crisis
