Eduardo E. Benarroch, M.D. in Professor of neurology and consultant of the Department of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN. He is the Director of the Basic Neuroscience Course for neurology residents, editor of the section Neuroscience in the Clinic in the  Neurology and recognized international expert in autonomic disorders. He has published 479 peer reviewed original papers and reviews is the author of several books, including  Central Autonomic Network   (Futura, 1997),  Basic Neurosciences with Clinical Applications (Elsevier, 2006),  Neurosciences for Clinicians (Oxford University Press, 2021),  Autonomic Neurology (Oxford University Press 2014), Clinical Autonomic Disorders, 3rd edition ( together with Dr. Phillip A. Low; Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott William & Wilkins, 2008) and co-editor of Mayo Clinical Medical Neurosciences (last edition, Oxford 2018)

Topic: An approach to evaluation of autonomic failure

Objectives: 

  • To define automatic failure in the context of autonomic disorders

  • To provide a classification of the main causes of autonomic failure

  • To discuss three typical clinical scenarios manifested with prominent autonomic failure.

Disorders associated with autonomic failure can be classified according to the type and severity of autonomic manifestations, associated neurological symptoms, and temporal profile, which is  (important for presumptive diagnosis, and guidance of  laboratory evaluation. Subacute, isolated autonomic failure suggests an autoimmune, including paraneoplastic autonomic ganglionopathy. Progressive generalized autonomic failure is typical of synucleinopathies, including pure autonomic failure (PAF), Lewy body disorders and multiple system atrophy.  Peripheral neuropathies with prominent autonomic include those  associated with diabetes and amyloidosis.
