Topic: An approach to evaluation of autonomic failure
Objectives:
-
To define automatic failure in the context of autonomic disorders
-
To provide a classification of the main causes of autonomic failure
-
To discuss three typical clinical scenarios manifested with prominent autonomic failure.
Disorders associated with autonomic failure can be classified according to the type and severity of autonomic manifestations, associated neurological symptoms, and temporal profile, which is (important for presumptive diagnosis, and guidance of laboratory evaluation. Subacute, isolated autonomic failure suggests an autoimmune, including paraneoplastic autonomic ganglionopathy. Progressive generalized autonomic failure is typical of synucleinopathies, including pure autonomic failure (PAF), Lewy body disorders and multiple system atrophy. Peripheral neuropathies with prominent autonomic include those associated with diabetes and amyloidosis.

These rounds are generously supported through formal partnership with the Division of Neurology; Alexion, Amylyx, EMD Serono, Grifols, Paladin Labs, Roche and UCB.
