Professor of Public Health/Neurology, University of Bordeaux and Bordeaux University Hospital

Stéphanie Debette, MD PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology/Public Health at the university of Bordeaux and practicing Neurologist at Bordeaux University Hospital. She serves as Director of the Inserm Bordeaux Population Health research center. Prof. Debette leads large collaborative genomic and epidemiological studies on stroke, cognitive traits, and imaging markers of brain aging, aiming to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying brain aging and to improve prevention and treatment of stroke and dementia.

Prof. Debette is principal investigator of national investment for the future and European grants. She serves in the research steering committee of the CHARGE consortium and is past chair of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium. She has been awarded with the Claude Pompidou Foundation Prize for Research on Alzheimer's Disease; Scientific Excellence Award from the European Stroke Organization and the French  National Medal of the Order of Merit for research career.

Topic: Genomics of cerebrovascular disease: from mechanistic insights towards clinical applications

In recent years large collaborative studies have enabled the discovery of numerous genetic risk loci for stroke and brain imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease. We will review these findings, the new mechanistic insight they provide into disease mechanisms and pathways and how they can be leveraged for clinical applications, such as drug discovery, risk prediction and stratification.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how mega-collaborations on stroke and cerebrovascular disease genetics have enabled major progress in understanding of their genetic underpinnings
2. Critically appraise the interpretation of association results from genome-wide association studies
3. Become familiar with possible clinical applications of this research
