University of Toronto Neurology Grand Rounds: Dr Jon Stone
Visiting Professor Series: Dr Jon Stone
Speaker: Professor Jon Stone (MB ChB FRCP PhD)
Professor of Neurology
Dept. Clinical Neurosciences (NHS Lothian)
Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences (University of Edinburgh)
Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Topic: Functional Neurological Disorder – “If I only had a brain”
Learning Objectives:
1. Learn positive diagnostic features of functional neurological disorder (FND) and other assessment/diagnosis pitfalls
2. Describe how neuroscience and psychosocial perspectives contribute to the mechanism and etiology of FND.
3. Explore new phenotypes of FND, especially in cognition, dizziness
4. Identify evidence-based treatment for FND
5. Find out how the scarecrow got a brain
The last 10-15 years have seen a large change in how neurologists are approaching FND. It’s been recognized how common and disabling it is, that it’s a diagnosis of inclusion, not exclusion, that psychological stress and adversity are important risk factors but may be absent. FND correlates with abnormal brain states - why wouldn’t it? - and it’s also more treatable than has traditionally been thought. Jon Stone will review recent advances in the diagnosis, aetiology and management of FND. He will especially look at whether new phenotypes in cognition and dizziness should be considered part of FND and the societal challenges of a disorder that disrupts conventional specialty and illness boundaries.
