Istvan Mucsi

Istvan Mucsi, MD, PhD is a clinician investigator, transplant nephrologist at the Multi-Organ Transplant Program and Division of Nephrology at the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto. He is the interim medical director of the kidney transplant program. He is Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto and a full member of the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto.

He received his medical degree (1988) and his certification in internal medicine (1993) in Budapest and completed nephrology training at the University of Toronto (1994-1997). Initially he had been working as a general nephrologist but later moved to Montreal to work as a transplant nephrologist at McGill University. He has moved to Toronto in April 2014.

His research focuses on identifying novel ways of assessing and managing physical and emotional symptoms that are important determinants of quality of life of patients with kidney disease and solid organ transplant. He is focusing on ways to efficiently integrate tools developed by the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) in the clinical workflow, for patient centered symptom and distress management. He was the clinical lead for UHN`s PROM strategy scoping project. He is an "expert advisor" of the Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program, chair of the patient reported outcomes measurement working group of the American Society of Transplantation and the Hungarian national representative of the PROMIS Health Organization.

He is also leading research projects in partnership with African, Caribbean and Black, Chinese, South Asian community organizations and First Nations in Canada to understand barriers that patients from these communities face when considering kidney transplantation.

Supervised 13 Ph.D. students in Hungary (defended); 4 master`s students (defended) at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Univ. of Toronto (defended). Currently supervising 4 MSc students. Supervised 150+ undergraduate students, thesis supervisor for 6 undergraduate students in Toronto.

He has published >200 peer reviewed articles.
