Dr. Suraj Tandon, MD, FRCPC, DABIM is a palliative care physician at the University Health Network and Toronto General Hospital, and an Assistant Professor and Clinician Teacher in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He is dual board-certified in Internal Medicine in both Canada and the United States and brings a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to the care of individuals with advanced and life-limiting illness.

Dr. Tandon completed his undergraduate training at McMaster University and obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas. He subsequently completed Internal Medicine residency training at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine in Connecticut, including a Chief Resident year, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Hampton and Norfolk, Virginia. He pursued fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, followed by a second fellowship in Palliative Medicine at the University of Toronto through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He also completed the Safety, Quality, Informatics, and Leadership (SQIL) program at Harvard Medical School, reflecting his commitment to advancing healthcare quality and systems innovation.

Clinically, Dr. Tandon specializes in complex symptom management, goals-of-care discussions, and end-of-life care for patients with advanced disease, including those with malignancy and multi-organ dysfunction. He has a particular interest in advancing communication practices in serious illness care, with a focus on supporting patients and families through complex and emotionally challenging medical decisions, while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across inpatient and community settings.

Dr. Tandon’s academic interests span novel therapeutics, quality improvement, and medical education. He has a particular focus on the use of medical cannabinoids and emerging psychedelic-assisted therapies, including psilocybin, in the management of pain and psychological distress in serious illness. His work also explores the ethical and clinical implications of these therapies, including their potential impact on patient decision-making at the end of life. In parallel, he is engaged in research and innovation in digital health, including the use of electronic medical records and artificial intelligence to enhance diagnostic accuracy, clinical efficiency, and both patient and provider experience.

An active educator and mentor, Dr. Tandon teaches medical students, residents, and fellows across multiple programs and is deeply committed to trainee development and wellness. He has contributed to structured mentorship initiatives and has completed formal training in medical education leadership. He is also the co-founder and CEO of MedEx Consult, an educational platform supporting students and graduates navigating pathways to residency and fellowship training in North America.

Dr. Tandon’s broader interests include healthcare systems reform, public policy, and the integration of innovative, patient-centered models of care within palliative and supportive medicine. Through his clinical, academic, and entrepreneurial work, he aims to advance compassionate, evidence-based care while shaping the future of medical education and health system delivery.
